Question 1

What are the eligibility requirements for registering a .au domain?

Accepted Answer

Applicants must demonstrate Australian connection through ABN, ACN, registered business name, Australian trademark, or incorporated association. Specific second-level domains have additional requirements; com.au requires ABN/ACN, id.au requires proof of citizenship/residency.

Question 2

How does .au compare to other domain options for Australian businesses?

Accepted Answer

.au offers geographic relevance, signals local presence, and performs better in Australian search results. Strict requirements enhance trust and reduce cybersquatting. While .com has broader global recognition, .au provides stronger local credibility. Multi-domain strategies work best for businesses with both international and Australian operations.

Question 3

What is the typical cost structure for .au domains?

Accepted Answer

Registration typically ranges from $15-$50 annually, with renewal prices potentially differing. Premium domains command significantly higher prices, often thousands in the secondary market. Some registrars offer multi-year discounts, and certain second-level domains like id.au may have different pricing structures. Compare total costs including renewal fees when evaluating registrars.
