Question 1

What documentation is required to register a .name domain?

Accepted Answer

Registrants may need to provide proof of identity or documentation verifying their right to use the specific name. The registry requires that domains be registered in the name of a natural person, not a business entity. For common names, additional documentation such as government-issued ID or business cards may be requested to prevent cybersquatting. The verification process varies by registrar but generally aims to ensure the registrant has legitimate rights to the name they're registering.

Question 2

Can I register a .name domain for a business or organization?

Accepted Answer

No, .name domains are specifically intended for personal use and must be registered in the name of a natural person. Business registrations are not permitted under .name registry policies. If you're seeking a domain for business purposes, consider alternative TLDs like .com, .net, or industry-specific extensions. However, you could register a .name domain for an individual who represents the business, such as a founder or CEO, which could serve as a professional profile page associated with the company.

Question 3

How does .name pricing compare to other personal TLDs?

Accepted Answer

.name domains are competitively priced compared to other personal identity TLDs, typically ranging from $20-40 annually. This places them in the mid-range of personal TLD pricing, more affordable than premium options like .me but potentially higher than some newer gTLDs. Pricing varies by registrar and may be influenced by factors such as registration length, premium name status, and promotional offers. Long-term registrations often offer discounted annual rates, making .name a cost-effective option for personal branding over time.
