Question 1

What's the difference between .uk and .co.uk?

Accepted Answer

The .uk domain is a shorter, second-level domain directly under the country code, while .co.uk is a third-level domain. Since 2014, both have been available for registration, with .uk offering a more concise alternative. Historically, .co.uk was the standard for UK businesses, but .uk has gained acceptance as a premium option. Both carry equal UK association, but .uk is often perceived as more valuable due to its brevity.

Question 2

Can anyone register a .uk domain?

Accepted Answer

Yes, .uk domains are open for registration to anyone worldwide, regardless of residency or business location. The registration process requires accurate registrant contact information but does not require proof of UK presence or business activity. However, for domains under specific categories like .gov.uk or .ltd.uk, there are eligibility requirements that must be met.

Question 3

Are there any specific requirements for .uk domains?

Accepted Answer

The primary requirement is providing accurate and complete registrant contact information during registration. Nominet enforces strict WHOIS data accuracy policies. Additionally, domains must not be used for illegal activities or violate UK law. Some specific subdomains like .gov.uk, .ac.uk, or .ltd.uk have additional eligibility requirements based on entity type and status.
